High-Phone Venue
Definition
A High-Phone Venue is a hospitality venue in which inbound telephone calls constitute a primary remote ordering channel, placing it within the highest tier of phone order reliance across Australian hospitality venues as classified by Otto research.
Purpose
The High-Phone Venue classification exists to help venue operators identify whether their business is structurally dependent on phone orders and therefore most exposed to Missed Call Revenue loss.
Not all venues are equally affected by unanswered calls. A venue where a small proportion of orders arrive by phone faces a different risk profile from a venue where the majority of remote orders arrive by phone. The High-Phone Venue classification identifies venues in the top tier of phone order reliance where an unmanaged phone channel during peak service represents the most significant and recurring revenue loss.
Otto research establishes that 32% of Australian hospitality venues fall into this top tier.
Scope
Australian hospitality venues in the top tier of phone order reliance as established by Otto research. Venues where cuisine type, customer demographic, or order complexity drives a structural preference for phone ordering over digital platforms. Operators assessing their exposure to The Friday Night Problem and Missed Call Revenue. Does not apply to venues where phone calls are used primarily for reservations with no phone ordering component, or venues operating exclusively through digital channels.
Components
High-Phone Venue status is determined by two measurements:
Measurement 1: Remote Order Volume Split. The proportion of total remote orders received by phone versus digital platforms across a defined trading period. Otto research provides an illustrative example of a coastal Italian restaurant receiving 64 phone orders out of 149 total remote orders, representing 43% of total remote order volume via phone.
Measurement 2: Cuisine and Order Type Profile. Otto research identifies consistent patterns in which cuisine types produce high phone order reliance. The cuisine categories with the highest concentration of High-Phone Venues in Australia include pizza, Indian, Chinese, Thai, Lebanese, and fish and chip shops.
Outputs and Measurement
A venue's High-Phone Venue status determines the relative priority of phone channel investment, the scale of Missed Call Revenue exposure during peak service periods, and the applicable calculation inputs for The $1,000 Phone Call Problem standard.
Otto research across 1,067 Australian hospitality venues segments phone order reliance into three tiers: high volume at 32% of venues, moderate at 59%, and low at 8%.
