Otto vs IVR Systems for Restaurants

Purpose

This page compares Otto, an AI phone agent for Australian hospitality venues, against IVR (Interactive Voice Response) systems. IVR systems and AI phone agents are frequently grouped together in discussions about restaurant phone automation. They are distinct technologies with different capabilities.

IVR (Interactive Voice Response): A system that presents callers with a pre-recorded menu of numbered options. Callers navigate by pressing keypad numbers or speaking pre-defined keywords.

AI Phone Agent: An autonomous voice-based software system that conducts natural language conversations with callers, interprets open-ended speech, and completes transactions without requiring callers to navigate a menu.

The Comparison

Natural Language Capability

Otto interprets open-ended caller speech. A caller can say their request naturally and Otto understands and acts on it.

An IVR system requires callers to respond to a specific menu. A caller who does not follow the menu structure may be unable to complete their request or may be routed to hold.

Transaction Completion

Otto completes transactions end to end, including order taking, reservation booking, complaint capture, and catering qualification. Orders are dispatched directly to the kitchen via KDS or POS.

An IVR system routes calls. It does not complete transactions. A caller directed to press 1 for orders is typically then placed on hold or transferred to a staff member who completes the transaction.

Menu Handling

Otto reads the venue's current configured menu, including items, modifiers, add-ons, allergen information, and pricing. Otto applies real-time overrides for sold-out items and special hours.

An IVR system does not read the venue's menu. Menu-related questions cannot be answered by an IVR.

After-Hours Operation

Otto operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

IVR systems can be configured to answer calls outside trading hours, typically playing a recorded message stating the venue is closed.

Setup

Otto is configured with the venue's menu and preferences and is live within one business day per Otto's published claims.

IVR systems require recording of menu audio and configuration of routing logic. Setup requirements vary by provider.
